Manchester United will begin their defense of the Carling Capital One League Carabao Cup against Championship side Burton Albion at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Manager José Mourinho is expected to name a much-changed side, although his record of treating all cup competitions with seriousness means that it is still likely to be an experienced team on the pitch. Mourinho has confirmed that core first XI players David de Gea, Eric Bailly, Nemanja Matić, and Antonio Valencia are all being rested.
"Oh, yes. Serious. Because it's football, it's competition. We take it seriously.
"Of course, we're not playing David or Bailly but, if we go to the next round, probably these guys will play and I will give a rest to others. Our squad is good.
"We don't have 30 players, we have what we have, and a couple of injuries right now with Paul Pogba and Axel Tuanzebe. So we need some of the players that played on Sunday to play and we need some to be on the bench.
"We need to be with a strong team. I know the quality of the Championship and I know, if we don't take the game seriously, we are going to lose."
Unfortunately, promising young defender Axel Tuanzebe is carrying a back injury and will not make his first start of the season. Instead, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelöf are likely to continue their partnership after making their season debuts in the Champions League last week. With Matić rested and Pogba injured, club captain Michael Carrick may finally make his first appearance of the season. Luke Shaw, back in training in recent weeks and not featured with the reserves on Monday, is also in line for his first involvement.
