José Mourinho needs a win over winless Newcastle United on Saturday, and even that might not be enough. Reports are conflicting, but some claim that the Manchester United manager will be given the boot regardless of what happens at Old Trafford in the teatime kickoff. If his fate isn’t already sealed, anything other than three points might well do the job.
His position is made even more precarious by Newcastle’s current predicament. Rafa Benítez’s side have mustered just two points from their opening seven league fixtures, and find themselves in the bottom three at this early stage of the season. Surely, surely they’re not going to notch their first win at Old Trafford. Are they?
The Magpies will have to do without Florian Lejeune, while Paul Dummett, Salomón Rondón and Federico Fernández all face late fitness tests. For United, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Jesse Lingard are all sidelined; Ashley Young is a doubt.
