Manchester United have been drawn against one of the tournament favorites in the next round of the UEFA Champions League. United’s reward for pooing the bed against Valencia last week — and thus blowing a chance to top their group — is a two-legged tie against French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain. PSG won their own group ahead of Liverpool and Napoli.
PSG are rightly considered heavy favorites in the matchup, as they are unbeaten in league competition, and possess some of the premier attacking talents in world football in Kylian Mbappé and Neymar. United on the other hand are now looking less and less likely to even qualify for next season’s competition because of their wretched form in the league. Recent reports have stated that lame duck manager José Mourinho will remain in his job until Champions League qualification becomes a mathematical impossibility. That is a patently stupid idea, but also the kind of thing we’ve come to expect from United these days.
If Mourinho is still in situ when the first knockout rounds take place in February, a heavy defeat could well spell the end of his time at Old Trafford.
