19.00 In times of turmoil, we turn to the pages of the Manchester Evening News for comfort. They are, after all, the newspaper physically closest to Old Trafford. They should have the inside scoop, right?
Well, they are reporting that United’s players reckon that Solskjaer has won it. Apparently:
Sources have told the MEN United players expect to be informed on Tuesday evening of Solskjaer’s likely appointment after Jose Mourinho was sacked by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward on Tuesday morning.
Stories like this don’t always land, of course — tBB vaguely remembers United’s players expecting Mourinho when they got David Moyes. But it’s interesting nonetheless.
How they feel about this appointment is another question. Presumably the majority of the dressing room are feeling quite relieved that he isn’t Mourinho, and there’s also the fact that Solskjaer seems to be one of the nicer human beings knocking around football.
But as a manager, his pedigree is fairly slim. This is an appointment made for the moment, and for the mood. And on that basis, it can hardly fail, at least in the short term.
