Now that all this World Cup business is over, we can get back to the real thing. Manchester United are back in action, baby! It’s a pre-season friendly featuring a half-fit makeshift squad in front of a half-full stadium, but it’s something. The Reds face off against Club América in Arizona tonight (or this morning, depending on your time zone) at the Phoenix University stadium. With 12 senior players missing from the squad due to their international commitments, this pre-season tour is a chance for some young players to make a claim for more first-team involvement in the coming season.
As is customary in the first couple of pre-season fixtures, José Mourinho will probably ring full changes at half-time, so United fans will get a look at most of the players in the traveling squad tonight.
We kick off at 03:00 Friday morning in the UK, which is 10:00 PM Thursday on the east coast of the USA, and 7:00 PM over on the west.
Pre-season TV channel
You’re shit out of luck in the UK and USA, outside of MUTV, but depending on where you are, livesoccertv has some options.
Nothing (legal) outside of MUTV, unfortunately.
Trying to guess the first preseason lineup of the summer is a fool’s game, but we’ll give it a go.
Prediction: Joel Pereira; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Shaw; McTominay, Herrera, Andreas Pereira; Mata, Martial, Gomes.
Update: Not a bad effort there, Brent. Thanks, Brent! Lee Grant gets his first start after joining the club just this month, and Demetri Mitchell slots in on the left of the attack.
From the starting lineups being handed out to media at the match, it appears that Andreas Pereira is sitting the deepest of the midfielders.
