Starters
Lee Grant: 5/10
Had a couple decent saves, but wasn’t really challenged much apart from the 2 goals conceded.
Ethan Laird: 6/10
Had some enterprising runs forward down the right. Didn’t keep up the energy throughout the match, but overall a good performance
Axel Tuanzebe: 6/10
Solid return from injury for Tuanzebe. Hopefully will become a reliable 3rd option at centre back.
Dishon Bernard: 6/10
Solid debut from Bernard, who formed a good partnership with Tuanzebe, and had a really nice clearance over the bar from short range that Phil Jones would have certainly put in his own net.
Luke Shaw: 4/10
Not a great performance from Shaw on his return from injury. Didn’t make much of an impact going forward, and poor defending led to a goal for Astana.
Dylan Levitt: 6/10
Solid first start in the first team, but his influence didn’t really last into the second half. Still, he looked comfortable in midfield. With lack of quality depth in midfield he looks like someone who could work his way into more cup, or even league matches.
James Garner: 5/10
Formed a good partnership with Levitt, but the control of midfield faded after a strong first half. Hope to see more of him in the first team.
Jesse Lingard: 6.5/10
Did well to score early and keep the offense turning from the center of the park. Could have had a better second half, but hopefully he can build off of this performance.
Angel Gomes: 4/10
Not as influential as he could be, still has a lot of work to do on his game.
Tahith Chong: 3.5/10
Decent first half, but played poorly in the second, and missed a sitter that should have doubled United’s lead.
Mason Greenwood: 5.5/10
Did well to get into position for chances, but could have done better to convert.
Substitutes
D’mani Mellor: 5/10
Solid appearance, put in a good shift at right wing replacing an under performing Chong.
Largie Ramazani: N/A
Ethan Galbraith: N/A
Ramazani and Galbraith look like good prospects, but weren’t on the pitch long enough to make an impact for United.
Manager
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: 5/10
Difficult to measure the strength of a largely untested squad, but Solskjaer should have done better making adjustments in the second half. It became clear that Astana was wrestling momentum away near the end of the first, but Solskjaer neglected to change things up until his side were already down 2-1.
