Manchester United could lose midfielder Ander Herrera to Paris Saint-Germain for nothing this summer. The Spaniard’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and he is said to have already agreed a contract with the French giants after United refused to meet his £200,000-a-week wage demands.

The rumours appear to have originated with a report in the Daily Record, which claims that Herrera will leave despite manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s desire to make him an important part of the United first team as he plans for his first full season in charge. PSG are set to lose young French midfielder Adrien Rabiot when the transfer window opens, and Herrera is likely to be his medium-term replacement.

The news is especially galling given that Herrera is enjoying one of his most impressive seasons since joining United from Athletic Bilbao five years ago. He’s hard-working, versatile, and a much better footballer than many have given him credit for. Let’s hope he sticks around.
