Two Manchester United academy graduates have extended their contracts with the club today, as Axel Tuanzebe and Andreas Pereira have signed deals keeping them with the club until 2022 and 2023, respectively. Both deals have the option to be extended for a further year. Tuanzebe and Pereira had both been linked with permanent moves away this summer in search of regular playing time, but now that possibility has been ruled out.

Tuanzebe and Pereira will both join United on the pre-season tour that starts next week. While Pereira is now a regular — if fringe — presence in the first-team squad, Tuanzebe will be expected to compete to earn a squad place for next season. With several senior center backs ahead of him in the pecking order, Tuanzebe may still opt for a return on loan to Aston Villa in order to play regular top flight football. Here at The Busby Babe, we think he’s good enough to get regular playing time at United next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rates the 21-year-old highly, and Tuanzebe sounded happy to continue at the club where he’s been since he was 8 years old.

“I have grown up at Manchester United and it has always been a big part of my life and my family’s life. I appreciate the trust that the club has in me and I want to repay that with my performances on the pitch.

“I know I have a lot of hard work and learning ahead of me but the experience I gained throughout last season puts me in good stead for the future ahead. I am determined to give everything and show everyone the player that I can be.

“I can’t wait for the tour to get started and to see what the upcoming season brings.”

The manager spoke highly of Pereira as well, and for not the first time this summer, Solskjaer emphasized the importance of knowing what it means to play for Manchester United.

“Andreas is another player brought through our Academy that understands what it means to play for Manchester United. He came from another country but quickly understood the values of playing for this club and doesn’t take it for granted.

“Andreas has become an important member of the squad with his energy and hard work in midfield. He works non-stop every day in training, has a great character and knows what he has to do to continue his development here. We all look forward to working with him in the season ahead.”

Now that both players’ futures are secured, what are your expectations for them this season? Let us know in the comments below.
