Manchester United Women have announced that former club captain and England international Alex Greenwood has left the club for Olympique Lyonnais. The serial French and European champions are a hot destination for the best of the best in the Women’s game, and Greenwood bolsters an already impressive backline.

The loss of Greenwood is a setback for United, who have had a busy summer window ahead of their debut season in the English top flight. They managed to hold on to most of their Championship winning team as well as add top talents such as England defender Abbie McManus and Dutch midfielder Jackie Groenen, but will now begin the search for a new team captain and starting left-back.

Casey Stoney’s side begin their Women’s Super League campaign on Sept. 7th against defending champions Manchester City.
