Bruno Fernandes’ arrival at Manchester United was met with a massive sigh of relief from most fans after weeks of speculation, including rumors that the deal had stalled out just a few days before its completion. Fernandes is the latest arrival in a growing line of Sporting Lisbon imports. It’s a line that includes names like Nani, and the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was revealed this morning that Bruno Fernandes would be sporting the no. 18 shirt for Manchester United. It was recently freed up by the departure of Ashley Young after an 8 year spell at the club, but is certainly more legendary for its association with Paul Scholes, who wore it through most of his iconic career at Old Trafford. Fans will hope that Fernandes can provide a similar spark in United’s midfield for years to come.

In his first interview since his arrival, Fernandes discussed his dream to play for Manchester United, his idolization of Cristiano Ronaldo, and his motivation to become one of the best.

“I saw many games in Portugal because they show the games there and I followed Manchester United more when Cristiano [Ronaldo] was here,” Fernandes said. “He’s a big player and I see him as an idol and I want to be in the form like Cristiano showed.”

He is aware that comparisons to CR7 will be made, but made it clear that he wants to write his own story now. “[Ronaldo] has played 15 years at the top and it’s difficult to do this, but I want to give my best to write my name in the history of Manchester United.”

Fernandes arrives at a time where Manchester United need heroes, particularly in the middle of the park. He could be set to make his debut at Old Trafford this Saturday when Wolverhampton Wanderers come to town. It’s been a difficult matchup for United in recent years, especially in midfield, but Bruno Fernandes is hoping to change United’s fortunes this season and for years to come.

“I just want to win. I live to win and I want to win every single game,” Fernandes said, leaving fans with a clear message. “My message is I am here to help, and I hope we can celebrate a lot together.”
