Starters

David de Gea: 7/10

May have been able to do more on the own goal. Had a great palm save in the second half but overall not much to do.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 8/10

Kept Allan Saint-Maximin quiet for 90 minutes while also getting up and down the field really well. Justly rewarded with his first goal for the club.

Victor Lindelöf: 7/10

Overall solid day at the office.

Harry Maguire: 9/10

Had the big performance that he needed. Kept the defense organized, got forward well, and came up big with the equalizer when United needed him to.

Luke Shaw: 7/10

Got unlucky with the own goal but more than made up for it with great play over the next 88 minutes.

Scott McTominay: 8/10

Dropped into the back three to play as a right center back — the same role he’s been playing for Scotland — to great effectiveness. Broke up many Newcastle counter attacks. His best match in quite some time.

Fred: 5/10

Playing as the further forward of the two midfielders isn’t his game and he struggled.

Dan James: 5/10

Wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. Ate 76 minutes to keep other players’ legs fresh for the brutal upcoming schedule.

Juan Mata: 9/10

Another fantastic display from Mata. Dropped into midfield allowing Wan-Bissaka to get forward and helped link the defense to Bruno Fernandes, allowing Bruno to be dangerous.

Bruno Fernandes: 9/10

Was long overdue to finally miss a penalty, luckily got it out of the way in a 4-1 game where he personally made up for it. Moved over to the left wing after Van de Beek’s introduction and arguably became even more dangerous. Easily his best performance of the season.

Marcus Rashford: 8/10

Playing as the number 9 for the first time in about a year. Linkup play was fantastic. Good awareness to make a late run in behind on his goal.

Substitutes

Paul Pogba: 6/10

Best game of the season. Made an already dangerous United side more dangerous. Newcastle didn’t get a shot after Pogba’s introduction.

Donny van de Beek: 7/10

Another positive performance from the Dutchman has fans wondering why he’s yet to get a Premier League start. I’d imagine he’ll start against one of PSG or Chelsea.

Nemanja Matić: N/A

Came on to kill time at the end and did that.

Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: 8/10

Don’t think there was a single United fan who wasn’t questioning the starting XI when the team news first came out but overall it worked. Given the upcoming schedule this was always the game to rotate the squad. Even with loads of pressure on him to win this game he stuck to his plan and rotated the squad. Got the response needed after the loss to Tottenham and kept players fresh for the upcoming matches to PSG and Chelsea.
