It appears that one of Manchester United’s summer targets prefers a move to Anfield over Old Trafford. The Sun is reporting that the RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner has been dropping hints that he wants to join Liverpool in the summer despite being linked with United, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.

At just 23 years old, Werner is in high demand after his run this year in the Bundesliga, scoring 21 goals in 23 games, and four in the Champions League, including the 1-0 match-winner against Tottenham in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Werner has a £51 million release clause in his contract if a deal is completed before April and in a recent interview didn’t hold his intentions back when asked about being linked with Liverpool, saying:

“Liverpool are the best team in the world at the moment, and when you’re linked with that team it makes me very proud.

“It’s a pleasure but I know Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and to learn many more things to get on this level to play there.”

According to Sky Sports News, the German international is “almost certain” to leave Leipzig this summer and “favors a move to Liverpool” but only if he receives regular football with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

With an already stacked front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, playing time could be tough to come by, although Firminio is himself linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has prioritized signing a new striker this summer after missing out on Erling Haaland in January so this could be a blow to his plans if the rumors do come to fruition.

United and Barça are the only clubs to have made proposals thus far, with Liverpool yet to begin concrete talks with either Leipzig or Werner’s entourage, so there is still hope Werner could be lining up with United in August.
