There is no doubt that Manchester United and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are making moves to get the squad younger with transfers out over the last few seasons, and unfortunately that puts disgruntled midfielder Angel Gomes in an interesting position.

The seldom-used 19-year-old and his agent desperately tried to secure a January loan move out to another Premier League team but United blocked his request to leave. Gomes is out of contract at United at the end of the season and the club is struggling to negotiate a renewal and risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

As Gomes approaches his last five months of his United contract, he has generated a lot of interest from several European teams, including Barcelona and now Gomes is free to negotiate with overseas clubs because he is in the final year of his contract.

Gomes, his agent, and United have been in contract talks since the start of the season and Gomes rejected United’s opening offer earlier this year because they were “underwhelmed” by the initial offer.

Featuring primarily in U-23 matches, Gomes has only started three times for United and made five substitute appearances. The Salford-raised academy product has seen fellow U-23 members Mason Greenwood, James Garner, and Brandon Williams sign new contracts and have extended spells in the first-team squad.

Earlier this month, Solskjaer addressed the possible future of Gomes and Tahith Chong, who is also unhappy and wants to leave United at the end of the season.

“We’ve had lots of conversations with the boys. Obviously their contracts run out in the summer but we want them to stay.

“I can’t see a better place for a young lad that’s come through the ranks in the academy to play first-team football. Both Angel and Chongy have been here for many, many years.

“We just want them to continue their development and hopefully they can see that when young lads take their chance, they’ll get more opportunities.”

Gomes is definitely in an interesting situation, so we will see how this one plays out during the last half of the season.
