State of the Blog: Football in the time of COVID-19

Well, what do we do now?

We’re in the midst of a global pandemic. People everywhere are terrified for the health and safety of their loved ones. Entire economies are grinding to a halt. People have lost their jobs, and what passes for a social safety net in major post-industrial nations is being exposed for the sham it always was. Worst of all: the football is canceled.

So what do we — ostensibly a football blog — do, without any football to talk about?

Well, dear readers, we plan to just do our best. All of our current writing team is based between the UK and the US, and so many of us have had our daily lives disrupted by the coronavirus in ways we would have never imagined. It’s a weird, unprecedented time, and a lot of us are uncertain about what comes next. In light of that, not being able to write “Five Things We Learned From Tottenham Hotspur 0-8 Manchester United” seems decidedly less important.

That said, we do this because we love football, and because we love Manchester United. So the content must go on. Rona be damned. We’ll keep you up to date on the conclusion (?) of the season. Does all of 2019-20 get scrapped? Did the universe really intervene this dramatically just to keep Liverpool from winning the league? If so, your heart was in the right place, universe, but this is a bit much. Does the Europa League continue some time in May or June as a mini-tournament? A lot is up in the air at the moment, but we’ll try to share the news as we get it, and give you a place to discuss it too.

We’ll also have to get creative. I, personally, cannot stomach a “Is Paul Pogba going to sign a new contract?” story every day for the foreseeable future. So we’ll do some retrospectives. We’ll make some lists that hopefully spark healthy debate. We might photoshop Phil Jones in a banana costume again. We’ll write some personal essays. We may even make up quotes from our dogs and share some pretty useful recipes.

But we’ll still be here, even if life means that one or more of us have to step away for a bit at various points. And we want to hear from you! Just because we’re smarter and better looking and better at writing and thinking about football than you are, it doesn’t mean we’re above feedback. We have some great ideas in the pipeline (and maybe some terrible ones — you’ll find out soon enough), but we want to know what kind of content you’d like to see more of on The Busby Babe during this enforced hiatus. Please let us know in the comments.

In the meantime, stay safe, stay home, and thanks for being a part of our little community.
