It took awhile but Manchester United have sprung into action in the summer transfer window. After reportedly wrapping up a five-year deal for Dutch international and Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek on Sunday, United have now switched their focus to RB Leipzig center-back Dayot Upamecano.

According to ESPN, United believe they can sign the defender to help solidify the back line and partner captain Harry Maguire next season.

Upamecano had a €60m release clause until he signed a new contract this summer. This new contract contains a new clause worth €42m which comes into effect at the end of next season, but there are suggestions that RB Leipzig could be prepared to sell if they receive a good offer.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring in a new center-back this summer and the club have identified Upamecano as their top target.

Arsenal were also interested in Upamecano but United appear to have the lead in negotiations.

United are expected to ship off a number of their defenders during the transfer window, with Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones all rumored to be heading for the exit door at Old Trafford.

But with Solskjaer also concerned about the reliability of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelöf, and the fitness record of youngster Axel Tuanzebe, the signing of a new center half has become of even greater importance.
