Starters

David De Gea: 7/10

Not as busy as some may have expected today. Great save late against Thiago, not much else to do.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 8/10

Alert defensively against Robertson for most of the match, but let a couple crosses in. Decent work at the other end as well, and set up a Pogba chance late in the match.

Victor Lindelof: 8/10

Lindelof made a terrific return to the starting XI at Anfield today, and proved why he’s been the choice partner for Maguire under Ole. Several clearances and break up plays, and blocked shots from scary positions as well.

Harry Maguire: 8/10

Great defensive performance all around, and the organization came from Maguire and Lindelof maintaining control of the middle. Key clearances and shot blocks kept Liverpool frustrated and De Gea safe.

Luke Shaw: 9/10

Excellent against TAA, and was a big presence for United in attack. Nearly set up a goal for Bruno with a great pass, and made several key runs to put the pressure on Liverpool when it looked to all be going their way in the first half. Influential performance today.

Fred: 7/10

Good defensive screen with McTominay, and forward thinking passing helped push United forward after an extended period defending.

Scott McTominay: 6/10

Good work defensively and breaking up play in midfield, but not good enough going forward. A couple annoying and ugly passes, but overall decent performance.

Paul Pogba: 7/10

Had a couple of United’s few chances. Strong presence today, and probably should have scored a winning goal late, but denied by Alisson.

Bruno Fernandes: 6/10

Frustrated in yet another big game. Nearly scored a free kick, and had some shots at goal, but failed to make a major impact.

Anthony Martial: 5/10

Not very sharp going forward, decent effort helping Shaw in defense. Subbed for Cavani after failing to make an impact.

Marcus Rashford: 6/10

Ineffective in the first half, much better in the second. Still maybe should have done better on a breakaway chance late. Needs to watch offside more as well.

Substitutes

Edinson Cavani: 6/10

Good energy in attack, maybe should have started.

Mason Greenwood: N/A

Came on late for Bruno, failed to get invovled.

Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: 7/10

Manchester United were set up well in defense today. Lindelof and Maguire were hardly ever challenged in the middle, and dealt with balls in well, and the full-backs held their own despite challenging match ups. Still, the defensive plan meant relying heavily on counter attacks and sporadic periods of possession, which did not suit United’s attack. Bruno was cut off for much of the game, and wayward passes early meant United didn’t get any meaningful possession until around the half hour mark. They couldn’t grow into the game well, and were wasteful with opportunities. Solskjaer didn’t really address this in the second half, and his substitutions late didn’t make much of a difference. United came in top and are still top, but they won’t last long in a title race if they’re too conservative in big games. They should be disappointed not to get more from this game.
