The International break is over, and Manchester United return for the final stretch of the 2020/21 season. One of the closely followed storylines all year has been the goalkeeping battle between club legend David De Gea and Academy graduate Dean Henderson. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has gotten to see plenty of both players this season, and is now faced with a big decision over who will stand in goal for his rebuilding project.
For all he’s accomplished in ten seasons at Old Trafford, David De Gea is not the keeper he used to be. over the last couple years he’s developed an unhealthy habit of letting in goals he typically had little to no trouble with, some going right through his hands. He’s even been benched by Luis Enrique for Spain in favor of Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon. Dean Henderson on the other hand has continued his impressive rise up the ranks for both club and country. Henderson has taken over all backup duties, including starting in cup competitions, and had an impressive spell as the starter in all competitions in De Gea’s absence leading into the international break.
De Gea has been a bit more consistent this season, but still has the odd out of character mistake. Benching him now would certainly mean the end, but there is the issue of his contract and finding a buyer. A benefit to keeping him as no. 1 could be maintaining both his confidence and transfer value.
Ole is faced with the final decision, but we want your input as well.
