Manchester United defender Brandon Williams could be set for a loan move for the upcoming 2021/22 season, with reports linking him to Southampton. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Saints teams have proven admirable opponents with Premier League staying power in recent seasons, making them a potentially positive loan destination for young players in need of first team minutes to continue their development.

Williams was given some good playing time early in his career during the 2019/20 season after Luke Shaw went down with an injury, and though he performed well enough as a temporary starter he failed to keep up his performances as a rotational player.
A loan to Southampton could be what Williams needs to continue his development. He’s shown he has talent as a multi-purpose full-back/wing-back, and doesn’t shy away from making tough challenges. He has a grittiness too that adds a nice edge to his defensive game. Riding the bench and playing with the youth and reserves won’t do him much good now after a taste of the big time.
