Manchester United are reportedly “in pole position” to land Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland next summer. The Norwegian forward has been an unstoppable force since moving to the Bundesliga in 2020, but his ambitions to play on a bigger stage are well known. All of Europe’s elite clubs will be in for his services, but it appears that currently the Red Devils lead the pack in the race of potentially the next great generational goalscorer.

Haaland’s past connection to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is well known, having played for Molde before moving to RB Salzburg, and it is also well known that Solskjaer wants a new number 9 to lead his attack. Edinson Cavani has been an excellent addition to the squad, but his contract expires at the end of the season.

The report from BILD furthers the expectation that Haaland will leave next summer, when his relatively bargain buyout clause will reportedly kick in. Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, and father, former Man City and Leeds player Alf Inge Haaland, went on a well publicized tour of suitors near the end of the 2020/21 season, and though Covid-19 has hurt plenty of teams the money will surely be shelled out by any party that can find a loan for it. Haaland is just that good.

Recent reports that Robert Lewandowski is looking to move on from Bayern Munich could offer a new obstacle in United’s pursuit of Haaland, as the Bavarians are well versed in picking off top Bundesliga talent from their rivals, but as things stand there is plenty of reason for optimism that Old Trafford could see a new superstar arrival next summer.
