Here are the player ratings from Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.
David De Gea: 9/10
Excellent today, a man of the match performance in goal. Crucial in keeping United level before Greenwood gave them the lead late. Vintage saves, and hopefully an indicator that the De Gea we know is back.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7/10
Got an important goal line stop in the opening minutes, and Adama had to switch sides to try and find a way forward in the second half. Nothing special going forward, but his first job was well under control.
Raphael Varane: 8/10
A great debut alongside Maguire, had several key clearances and looked comfortable dealing with chaotic situations.
Harry Maguire: 8/10
Wolves looked dangerous and yet found no way through, and for good reason. De Gea was excellent and the centre back pair ahead of him made a good match too. Strong in the air facing a few crosses, and effective even when he had to scramble back.
Luke Shaw: 6/10
Useful defending today, but didn’t look as sharp as he did in the first two matches. Will be hoping for more creativity ahead of him on the left than what was offered from Sancho today.
Fred: 5/10
Very poor, potentially catastrophic start to the game, but recovered fairly well. Got some interceptions and defensive recoveries in to make up for his bad give aways.
Paul Pogba: 7/10
Didn’t keep up his assist streak, but kept an eye forward all game, which was desperately needed in the United midfield. Might have been more comfortable with more defensive assistance in midfield, but performed admirably with his duties regardless.
Bruno Fernandes: 5/10
Bruno looked out of it again today, and apart from a disallowed goal for offside he really struggled to make an impact.
Jadon Sancho: 5/10
Absent from the action for much of the first half, grew into the game a bit in the second but never made much of an impact.
Dan James: 5/10
Heavily involved but couldn’t find his teammates on the end of his runs. Lacking end product is a worrying trend for James, who hasn’t grown much since his arrival two seasons ago.
Mason Greenwood: 8/10
Greenwood just keeps on going. Started at centre forward and looked sharp, moved out wide when Cavani came on. Forced something to happen and was rewarded with a goal when United needed it. Could be a great season ahead for the young forward.
Substitutes
Edinson Cavani: 6/10
Gave United someone to aim at centrally, but no one really took advantage.
Anthony Martial: 5/10
Little impact on the left.
Diogo Dalot: N/A
Came on late, made little impact.
Manager
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: 7/10
Good defensive performance under pressure, definitely the right call to start Varane for this one. The midfield and attack were directionless for much of the match however, and the substitutes didn’t appear to help much either. Greenwood made something happen again, but things will need to change further down the pitch to get things going. Hopefully it’s just early season rust. The Premier League doesn’t wait for anyone to catch up.
