Manchester United captain Harry Maguire and star full back Luke Shaw appear set to miss the club’s UEFA Champions League group match against Villarreal at Old Trafford on Wednesday. The pair suffered injuries in the Premier League loss to Aston Villa last Saturday, and little information has been given on their status since.

The Times reported this morning that the pair will be assessed again today, so the injuries do not appear to be major, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told the press on Saturday that it is unlikely they’ll play in the rematch of the 2021 UEFA Europa League Final.
Maguire missed that final match due to injury as well, and the team’s form suffered greatly in his absence down the stretch last season. He is not only a leader in the team, but has made a tremendous impact in improving the defense under Solskjaer. Shaw has similarly made a positive impact from left back under Solskjaer, and has had a brilliant run of form over the last calendar year. He has a worrying injury history, but has been able to stay healthy as of late.
Fans will be hopeful of a positive update this week, given that United’s schedule only heats up from here. With matches against Villarreal, Atalanta, Liverpool, and Spurs on the horizon, United will need their defense at full strength.
