Manchester United Women are out of the Conti League Cup at the group stage after Wednesday’s results. The Reds beat Everton at Leigh Sports Village 4-2 after a rapid fire first half, but group leaders Aston Villa clinched their spot in the knockout round after their win over Sheffield United.

United’s campaign began with two disheartening draws away from home against Durham and Villa, and both were followed by penalty shootout defeats. With the competition rules, draws mean both teams earn a point with a second point awarded to the shoot-out winner.

Last season United advanced to the semi-final stage of the competition, where they to eventual runners-up Chelsea.

With the cup campaign over, United can turn their focus back to the FA Women’s Super League campaign, where so far they find themselves in a tight race at the top with Chelsea and Arsenal. They’ll have another chance at cup glory when FA Cup play begins in the New Year.
