A place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup is on the line when Manchester United welcomes League One outfit Charlton Athletic to Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Having advanced into the fourth round of the FA Cup against Everton on Friday, Erik ten Hag’s side will be keen to continue our recent hot streak in M16 following the completion of the World Cup.

Seeing off both Aston Villa and Burnley so far in the competition, United will be hoping to reach the last four of the tournament for the first time since the 20/21 season.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Our clash with the Addicks on Tuesday evening will mark the 60th meeting between the two teams, with a place in the last four up for grabs at the Theatre of Dreams.

Last going head-to-head back in February 2007, United emerged 2-0 winners on that occasion, with goals from Ji-sung Park and Darren Fletcher ensuring victory.

In fact, the Reds have a strong record to protect against the League One outfit, having lost just one of our last 19 games against this week’s opponent.

Bruno Fernandes may have been in line for a rest this week anyway, but he will miss out through suspension after picking up two cautions in the tournament already, leaving Ten Hag slightly short of midfield options as Donny van de Beek awaits an update on the knee injury that he suffered against Bournemouth.

Jadon Sancho is also absent as he continues his individual program, while center-back Axel Tuanzebe is still recovering from an unspecified long-term issue. Loan signing Jack Butland is eligible to make his debut here, having not played for parent club Crystal Palace in the competition this term.

With Manchester City lying in wait for their next Premier League fixture, a heavily-altered XI could see the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Elanga and Fred handed chances to impress from the first whistle.
