Left-back has been a problem position for Manchester United ever since we realised Luke Shaw was unlikely to make the grade, though José Mourinho was unable to find a satisfying solution over the summer. However, if reports are to be believed, that could change in the near future, with young Spanish defender Aarón Martín linked with a move to Old Trafford.
According to ESPN FC’s Rob Dawson, United scouts were in attendance as Martín featured for Quique Sánchez Flores’ Espanyol in a goalless draw against Levante on Friday. The 20-year-old recently signed a new long-term deal at the Catalan club, though there is reportedly “a growing acceptance among officials at the La Liga side that they may not be able to keep the defender beyond the summer, or even the January transfer window.”
Mourinho is reported to have also considered Ryan Sessegnon and Jordi Alba, though neither would likely come much cheaper than Martín’s €40 million buyout clause. Watch this space.
