Wayne Rooney will not take part in Manchester United's pre-season tour as the England striker flies home after sustaining a hamstring injury, the club have announced.

The injury is believed to be likely to keep Rooney out of action for around a month, the club stated on their Twitter account.

With speculation over Rooney's future all over the press, it is likely that skepticism will be shown about his injury status - Chelsea have recently been linked with making a big-money move for the forward, who has only two years left to run on his contract as negotiations stall between player and club.

Rooney becomes the latest of a string of first-team players to pull out of Manchester United's tour squad, including Nani, Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez, and captain Nemanja Vidic. The tour squad now looks very light indeed as the club look to begin pre-season games in Bangkok, where they arrived yesterday.
