United open Fellaini negotiations, but want him AND Fabregas

Manchester United have reportedly opened negotiations for Everton's Marouane Fellaini, but are said to still be pursuing the signature of Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas as well.

Manchester United are entering talks with Everton over the purchase of Marouane Fellaini, according to reports in both The Guardian and the Daily Mail.

With United fans getting anxious over the club's lack of transfer activity, the paper reports that David Moyes could make the Belgian, who he brought to Everton while he was manager, his first major signing.

However, reports that the midfielder is a replacement target for Cesc Fabregas are believed to be wide of the mark, with several sources, including the Guardian's Daniel Taylor and Andy Mitten, the latter being very well-connected in both Barcelona and at Old Trafford, insisting that Fabregas is still United's main target.

The news comes as United gear up to face their first competitive match under Moyes, with the club set to face Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield at the weekend, before the Premier League season kicks off the following week.

It's good news in that Moyes clearly sees that midfield is the area of the team he most needs to strengthen. You can follow the latest updates on the prospect of a Cesc Fabregas transfer to Manchester United here, while recently we've also looked at how Marouane Fellaini would best fit in at United.
