Blind made a splash at the World Cup as a left wingback, is versatile enough to play as a traditional fullback and even a centreback, but he has been largely used as a central midfielder by Ajax in recent seasons. TBB suspects it's as a midfielder that he'll be playing most of his football for United. With Ajax, he's won the last four Eredivisie titles, and on a personal level he was named Ajax player of the year in 2012-13, and Dutch player of the year 2014.
He is the 5th arrival of the summer window so far, with Radamel Falcao hopefully to come. The fact it's taken until the last day of the window to finalise the deal suggests that he might not have been Louis van Gaal's first choice as an incoming midfielder, but at the same time, the fact that Blind knows Van Gaal and the system means that we can be optimistic that he'll make a decent contribution.
Update: And here he is, holding the shirt. A four-year deal with an option for a fifth, and a lovely smile.
