United chasing PSG full-back – reports

Could Gregory van der Wiel be the nail in Rafael's coffin?

We bring you this rumour not because it is likely to happen -- a quick scan reveals that it has featured on the golden triangle of terrible transfer 'news,' namely Talksport, the Daily Star, and the Metro -- but because it is at least something to ponder of a Monday morning. The rumour in question involves Manchester United purchasing Paris Saint-Germain right-back Gregory van der Wiel, who seems to be stalling on putting paper on a new deal with the Parisian club.

His agent has 'confirmed' 'interest' from clubs across Europe, though of course, agents are just as unreliable in these matters as the press that proliferate the rumours in the first place. Van der Wiel -- who once looked like a future star, but whose development stalled somewhat -- has also been linked with Newcastle United, a side that does seem more of his level. He's now 27 years old, and as good as he's ever going to be.

So, if we are going to sign a Rafael replacement, let's hope that it's someone better than van der Wiel. Danilo, anyone?
