Strong rumours are currently flying that Manchester United are currently in negotiations to sign Villarreal defender Eric Bailly. One of the first to the news was Sky Sports' Andy Burton, who claims that United have entered into a bidding war with Manchester City, Barcelona, and Paris St Germain, driving his "transfer fee towards the region of £30m".
There certainly seems to be some truth behind United's interest, given it's on several other reputable sites, though perhaps Burton's claims should be taken with a pinch of salt. That's because AS -- who quote the Carrusel Deportivo sports programme -- report that not only does Bailly have a release clause of €40m, but that United are not in a bidding war at all; instead, they're on the brink of sealing the deal for a fee said to be just short of the buyout sum.
Either way, it looks like this one could be a goer. We must admit, we're not familiar with the work of Bailly, though AS offer the following brief introduction:
Bailly has convinced at Villarreal with his strong dynamic physical style of play but has been prone to lapses of concentration and has been troubled with a series of shoulder injuries.
One could describe Phil Jones in similar terms. But we're guessing Bailly's a bit better than Jones. We sure do hope so, anyway. Viewers of La Liga, feel free to chip in and let us know whether this looks like a good deal.
