Memphis’ disappointing Manchester United career is set to come to a premature end, with the Dutch international reportedly close on completing a move to French side Lyon. The Manchester Evening News report that he could leave Old Trafford by the end of the week, despite the fact that the two clubs are yet to agree on a transfer fee.

The MEN claim that Lyon submitted an opening bid of £13 million, though United are said to want at least five million more for the 22-year-old, who has played just 20 minutes of Premier League football since José Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in the summer.

There was optimism back when the days were warm and long that Memphis really could blossom under Mourinho. On paper, he’s exactly the kind of strong, powerful, Eden Hazard-esque inside forward that the United boss has utilised to such good effect at his previous clubs. However, Memphis has seemingly never convinced Mourinho he has what it takes, and this transfer is probably best for all parties.
