Wayne Rooney vs. Manchester City, 2010/11

Rooney’s goal was ranked as the best Premier League goal of all time when the league celebrated its 25th anniversary but that’s not even what made this great. No, this was all about the context.

Rooney had gotten off to a rough start in 2010/11. He had a personal scandal, an ankle injury, and an ugly contract dispute that resulted in a transfer request and a link to joining City. City were still just the noisy neighbors but this season they were knocking on the door louder than ever. Only five points separated the leaders United from third place City.

What followed was one of the most tense derbies I’ve ever seen. When David Silva equalized in the second half, it felt like the tide was turning. This was going City’s way, they were going to cut United’s lead at the top to two points. It was going to be a dogfight.

Then Wayne Rooney went ahead and did this.

Rooney adjusts brilliantly and smashes it into the top corner. Some may say he shinned it, but there’s no denying that he hit it the ball exactly where it needed to go. The ferocity of the strike perfectly encapsulates all the best parts of Rooney’s game, and came at the right time for him to shed the negativity from the first half of the campaign and spark a run of form that would lead United to a record setting 19th Premier League title.

The skill is great but what puts this over the top is the statement. Not yet, City. Your time may be coming, but our time isn’t finished yet. We’re still the big brother, and this is still our title.

Robin Van Persie vs. Aston Villa, 2012/13

This goal may be more art than football.

After an incredible debut campaign, there seemed to be little Robin van Persie could do to top his already stellar 2012/13 season at Manchester United. Going up against Aston Villa, United needed just 3 points to seal a 20th Premier League title. The Dutchman put United up 1-0, and it seemed only a matter of time. However, instead of putting things on cruise control, United would produce one of the greatest goals ever scored in the history of the club.

Villa gave the ball away in United’s half, Shinji Kagawa quickly found Rooney near the half way line, who looked up, saw Van Persie, and immediately hit a beautiful long ball into his path. Van Persie ran onto it, and hit it first time past a helpless Brad Guzan.

The goal perfectly encapsulated Van Persie’s brilliant debut season, and sent Sir Alex Ferguson riding off into the sunset with an incredible 13th Premier League title.

Nani vs. Arsenal, 2009/10

Nani didn’t have the longevity in his Manchester United career that many hoped, but his few years at the top were full of memorable moments. He scored plenty of screamers, but maybe his most remarkable goal came from a solo effort at the Emirates in 2010.

It was a game in which Nani and Wayne Rooney stole the show. Rooney’s goal was a classic United team counter attacking goal, one which still trends on Red Devils Twitter, but Nani’s was a show of individual brilliance that demonstrated his individual skill and extraordinary creativity that can be easily forgotten sometimes.

He got the ball on the wing, isolated by Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri, but managed to skip in between the two, beat another man, and then loft a sensational chip over Manuel Almunia into the far side of the goal. The angle was ridiculous for such an attempt, and Almunia got a slight touch on it, leading stat keepers to chalk it up as an own goal, but it was all Nani’s work.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan vs. Sunderland, 2016/17

It was a short and largely unremarkable career at Old Trafford for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. As one of José Mourinho’s first signings, and coming off of a Bundesliga Player of the Season campaign, there were high expectations for the new playmaker. It took awhile for him to get his chance, but after some impressive cup and Europa League outings, Mkhitaryan finally worked his way into the starting lineup.

In a somewhat routine win over a severely struggling Sunderland side Mkhitaryan produced by far the most memorable moment of his United career, a sublime scorpion kick off of a Zlatan Ibrahimović cross.

Maybe the least important goal on this list, but it’s surely one of the most spectacular goals scored at Old Trafford in some time. Great showmanship from Mkhitaryan, who despite his faults, certainly had his moments as a player.

Juan Mata vs. Liverpool, 2014/15

It’d be one thing to just score on a semi-bicycle kick. It’s another thing to do it against Liverpool. It’s a whole other level when you do it at Anfield. That’s exactly what Juan Mata did in 2015.

There’s a lot to remember about this game. Brendan Rodgers famously dropped Steven Gerrard in his final home game against United only to bring him on at halftime. Gerrard’s time on the pitch lasted less than a minute before he was sent walking. That seemed like it was going to be the story of the second half, but then Mata had his moment of magic.

A chip into space by Ángel Di María (remember him?) was just behind Mata, but the Spaniard adjusted brilliantly, volleying it past Simon Mignolet to double United’s advantage and leave an already frustrated Anfield stunned speechless.

The goal gave United their fourth win in a row, a run that would reach six with a win over City and was crucial in United finishing in the top four that season.

Anthony Martial vs. Everton, 2015/16

This goal is perhaps greater for the moment than for the sheer quality of the goal, but the quality certainly helped it stand out in a season often bereft of it.

In the semi-final of the FA Cup at Wembley United were level with Everton at 1-1 going into the final minutes. Despite United taking the lead and looking the better team, Everton launched a series of attacks in the second half that eventually broke down a stellar David De Gea through a Chris Smalling own goal.

With stoppage time running out, young Anthony Martial took matters into his own hands. He picked up the ball on the left-wing, and orchestrated a series of exchanges to sneak through the Everton defense. Ander Herrera nearly slipped, but managed to play the final through ball to the Frenchman, who slotted it past Joel Robles.

The red half of the stadium erupted, and Martial and co. went into their arms to celebrate. For many the FA Cup isn’t as sought after as it once was, but for a team starved of success and quality for most of the 3 post-Fergie years up to that point it was a fantastic run led by bright young talents and aging legends. Another late winner in the final by Jesse Lingard sealed the deal, giving United their first trophy since The Boss’ retirement.

Who was United’s best player from 2010-2019?

Colin M. Damms - Wayne Rooney

Surprise surprise.

It’s certainly more of an argument than I’d like it to be, but Wayne Rooney’s play was undeniably breathtaking at times this decade.

It started in 2010 as he continued his best ever season at Manchester United. An ankle injury, poor World Cup, and off-field issues derailed what should have been one of the best years of his career, but he came back strong for 2011, scoring most of his 16 goals in the back half of the 2010/11 campaign, leading United to a 19th Premier League title and a berth in the UEFA Champions League Final.

Rooney hit the 30+ goal mark again in 2011/12, but the season after his prolific form in front of goal began to dwindle. First came the new role in behind Robin Van Persie, then came David Moyes, then Louis Van Gaal. The chaotic time post-Sir Alex saw Rooney play many different roles as his form continued to decline, but he still managed to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s long standing goal record to become Manchester United’s greatest ever goalscorer. He also helped United to an FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League title, completing a full set of medals in every competition played for in his Manchester United career.

Pauly Kwestel - David de Gea

There’s only one player who’s been world class for Manchester United throughout this decade and that’s David De Gea. It says a lot about the club that it’s a goalkeeper we have to highlight, but we already knew that was the case when De Gea won four of five Sir Matt Busby Player of the Season awards.

This decade saw De Gea go from being a flimsy kid who looked so light a strong gust of wind might blow him over, to at one point the best goalkeeper in the world. In 2017/18 De Gea went from being a great goalkeeper to a super human goalkeeper, posting a historically good season. Simply put, take him out of that team, and United wouldn’t have finished in the top four in any of José Mourinho’s seasons. He did have two prolonged contract disputes with the team, and that will sour some fans, but I’ve always been of the opinion that he never really wanted to leave, and was just trying to get paid what he was worth.

Brent Maximin - Robin van Persie

Over time, Wayne Rooney will be remembered a the player that defined a generation at Manchester United. Without an ill-advised flirtation with the neighbors across town, and perhaps a less pronounced decline in his last few years, Rooney would have a statue outside Old Trafford to look forward to one day. But Rooney’s peak years were undeniably in the decade before.

No one in this recent decade can boast multiple seasons of world class form as David de Gea can. The Spaniard not only won a record number of player of the season awards, but he has also been a fixture in the first XI for every season of this last decade, bar the first. But De Gea’s decade at United has come to be characterized as kind of defiant excellence; De Gea was his most brilliant despite the general incompetence surrounding him. A shining light in the darkness. A fine choice for player of the decade, for sure, but recognizing De Gea’s achievements means accepting a dose of reality. And right now, we have enough reality; we want nostalgia.

Robin van Persie had one truly great season at United. In what turned out to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season, van Persie strutted into Old Trafford looking every inch the United Player. He had the ability, the self-belief, the swagger, the desperation to win, and just the right amount of bastard. You can make a case that no one player contributed as much to a title-winning season. United’s last title-winning team was filled with winners, but it was a team whose core was on their last legs; a team at the end of their cycle. Van Persie’s injection of world-class forward play was exactly what United were missing when he joined.

Fergie told the playmakers in his team about van Persie, “He’s gonna win you the league, if you pass him the ball.” So said, so done.

Our writers pick their Team of the Decade

It’s been a funny old decade to support Manchester United. The first third of the decade was a continuation of the trophy-laden Sir Alex Ferguson era, while the rest of it has been characterized by a series of false dawns, poor signings, and almost unrelenting disappointment. Sure, there has been the odd trophy (and José Mourinho’s proudest career achievement of 2017-2018’s 2nd place league finish), but in the summer of 2013, Manchester United entered their own #BanterEra, and are yet to come out on the other side.

The successes of the early part of this decade are reflected in our writers’ choices for their team of the decade. For each of these chosen XIs, half of the the players chosen would likely be in the team of the decade for 2000-2009 as well. The unanimous choices of David de Gea, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, and Wayne Rooney are all club legends who deserve their inclusion — as well as popular selections like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić — but each of those players aside from De Gea arguably peaked in the previous decade. The lack of serious competition for places is an indictment of the fallen standards that have characterized the last several years. But for all the recent collective disappointment, there are some damn fine players in these hypothetical XIs.

Here are our picks for Manchester United’s Team of the Decade, 2010-2019. - BM

Brent Maximin

Putting this team together was a sobering experience. In either of the two previous decades, the internal debate would be centered around which of the multiple title-winning cores would make up the bulk of the all-decade starting XI. For 2010-19 though, well, the pickings were slim. The entire back four had already left United by the midway point of the decade.

I chose to reward players who showed brief, title-winning excellence (e.g., Robin van Persie, Nani, and Rafael da Silva) rather than alternatives with greater — and more mediocre — longevity (e.g., Antonio Valencia) or players whose inclusion would have been based on world-class potential rather than world-class form (e.g., Marcus Rashford). Nani’s inclusion may come as a surprise, but there was an eighteen month period around the start of the decade where he was not just the best player at United, but maybe the best player in the country.

In midfield, it was a toss up between Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera, and while the Frenchman has been the best midfielder at the club since his signing, his is a career that has still never really arrived at United, and may never do so.

Kevin Carpenter

There’s nothing too controversial here — I don’t think the world is ready for my first draft with Romelu Lukaku leading the line — but making these picks was not easy. The last ten years of Manchester United football aren’t exactly overflowing with worthy candidates. Glancing over this XI explains a lot about how and why the Reds have fallen off of late.

A quick word on Robin van Persie: what his United career lacked in length, it more than made up for in impact. Sir Alex Ferguson shocked the football world in 2012 by prying the prolific Dutchman away from Arsenal, offering him a long-awaited chance at Premier League glory. RVP didn’t even try to hide his ambitions — choosing to wear #20 because United stood just one league title away from that number.

And he delivered. Van Persie’s 26 goals in 2012/13 made all the difference in taking the Premier League crown back from our noisy neighbors. Manchester United needed every one of those goals, too, as RVP scored in ten different one-goal victories and four draws. No garbage time goals here.

Sure, injuries curtailed the rest of van Persie’s United career, but he did manage to add another 22 goals in that time. 48 goals in 86 PL matches — many of them instrumental in the club’s twentieth league title — more than earns him a spot in my All-Decade XI.

Pauly Kwestel

I’m sure what sets my XI apart, and where your eyeballs are going, is my selection in the center of defense. I just couldn’t put Ferdinand and Vidić out there together. This just wasn’t their dominant decade and, thanks to injuries to both of them, they really didn’t play together that often.

Chris Smalling made 323 appearances for United this decade. He scored 18 goals. He scored in multiple derbies including the winner at City when United came back from 2-0 down. He had the whole “Mike” Smalling thing which will always be funny. In 2015/16 when paired with Daley “I’m definitely not a center back” Blind he was the best defender in the league for the first half of the season.

He won two league titles, the FA Cup, the Europa League, and captained the team at Wembley in their League Cup triumph over Southampton. Bar the 2011 Champions League final, he started every Cup final United played in this decade. He wasn’t nearly as bad as many made him out to be over the last two years. Smalling was an ever-present for United over the past decade and deserves to be included.

Colin Damms

The front three felt pretty obvious, though Robin Van Persie and Zlatan Ibrahimović each had individual seasons nearly brilliant enough for me to include them. Rashford and Martial have been some of the more consistent members of the squad since they first broke through in 2015/16, and they’ve done so despite being teenagers when they first began leading the line. Wayne Rooney spent much of this decade on the decline from the form that made him a legend, but still scored 122 goals for Manchester United in the 2010s, which took him over Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing record of 249 total for the club.

The midfield and back line also felt straightforward. The Vidic and Ferdinand pairing is perhaps the most effective in club history, especially with Evra patrolling the left flank. It’s not been a great decade at right back for the Red Devils, and I think there’s a serious argument that Wan-Bissaka is already the best the club have had at the position since Gary Neville, though Rafael Da Silva deserves at least an honorable mention for his services under Sir Alex.

Vinciane Ngomsi

My starting XI was like taking a trip down memory lane while simultaneously harboring a bit of sadness that these players never had a chance to play together at once.

At the back, I couldn’t omit the obvious choices like Patrice Evra, Wes Brown and Rio Ferdinand. As a trio, those three truly made me fall in love with United, as their tenure at Old Trafford occurred at a point in my life where I began to truly understand the game of football. Evra left the club in 2014, yet his inclusion on this list says a lot about his impact until this day.

Given how United’s midfield has been as of late, Herrera’s summer departure for Paris Saint-Germain still triggers feelings of acrimony toward Ed Woodward and company. The Spaniard was only 30, and still had a few seasons left to dazzle.

Any lineup that overlooks Wayne Rooney is a list no one should even bother taking seriously. Despite leaving in 2017, he is still the face of this club and remains a catalyst behind some of United’s most memorable performances. Though his form dwindled in his last couple seasons at Old Trafford, he still managed to pick up the Europa League title in his final campaign under José Mourinho and score this stellar free kick to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton as United’s all-time top scorer.
